Interesting times: Ken Clarke named as surprise Justice Secretary in new Government

Had a quick scan of the papers to see if there had been any statement about the coalition government's justice agenda - early days, I know - but the only comment I could find was the new incumbent Ken Clarke's own statement: "I'm completely out of date on issues that are terribly important." 1. Also, Theresa May is confirmed as the new Home Secretary. Until last night, it was thought that Chris Huhne of the Lib Dems would get this, but it seems this was seen as too high profile a post to give to the Lib Dems.

  2. For those interested in the direction that Human Rights issues may take under the new Chancellor/Justice Secretary, see discussion at:

  3. 2nd time lucky..

yes - it's all very interesting! of all the Torys that could have been the Justice Secretary, Clarke is certainly one of the best - he is moderate and not afraid to speak his mind. Will hopefully speak more sense than many of his Labour predecessors! Seems the LibDems have already had a good tempering influence on the Tory's human rights agenda.. I'm glad it's orange and blue, and not just blue.. as far as Clark's other views on justice issues, I can't seem to find any online.. perhaps that's because he doesn't yet know what they are! fascinating stuff..
